In each situation, you can choose how you act. Choose to be happier.

Highs, lows, and everything in between is all part of life. Adverse events may be challenging to deal with no matter where you are or who you are—even for the most optimistic person. You may work toward a solution once you’ve changed to a more optimistic mentality. Negativity may exhaust you, so make sure you exercise self-care to ensure you’re fulfilling your own needs.

Here are five tips to help you stay positive in the face of adversity and find the silver lining in every situation.

1. Shift your mentality to one of positivity

Most unfavorable events contain a learning lesson, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the moment. Suppose we’re going to go through the difficulty and suffering of coping with a terrible circumstance. In that case, we might as well learn something from it.

It’s not about blaming yourself or anybody else for what occurred when you shift your perspective and search for the lesson in the circumstance. Instead, the goal is to salvage something constructive from the circumstance and, perhaps, prevent it from happening again in the future.

2. Seek assistance

You don’t have to deal with a problematic issue alone. Getting assistance from trusted friends or family can not only help you get through this challenging time, but it can also help you deepen your connections with those around you.

3. Concentrate on the things you can control (and let go of the things you can’t)

We can’t always control the circumstances we’re in, and we can’t please everyone all of the time. When we find ourselves in the wrong position, we may take responsibility for our acts and make apologies for our faults. Trying to accept responsibility for things you don’t have control over can only make you feel worse if you’re in the wrong position. It’s also counterproductive since you can typically do nothing about something if you don’t have control over something.

For example, suppose you’re flying to an important event, and the flight is delayed. In that case, it’s pointless to be concerned about whether it will be delayed further or canceled because you do not influence the situation. You can either inform any contacts you have at your destination of the issue or try to arrange an alternative airline to ensure you arrive as soon as feasible.

4. Develop self-compassion

Every adversity is an opportunity to hone a vital skill: self-compassion. Our quality of life is directly proportional to the amount of self-compassion we demonstrate. We’re more likely to be resilient in the face of adversity if we can practice self-compassion, and we’re more likely to take chances that advance our personal and professional growth if we can practice self-compassion. We’re also more inclined to correct whatever mistakes we made that contributed to the unfavorable circumstance in the first place.

Self-compassion does not imply that you should give yourself a pass or that you should not take responsibility for your actions. Accepting that you are a human being with human experiences is the key.

5. Keep in mind that it will pass

As I previously stated, life is a series of highs, lows, and everything in between. This not only indicates that unpleasant events are unavoidable, but it also means that they will pass and be replaced by more favorable moments.

We must extract as much as we can from the unpleasant events, whether it’s a valuable lesson or new faith in our own power and perseverance, and to savor the good moments while they last.


Finally, keep in mind that unfavorable events can be unpleasant, even painful. However, how we address these circumstances has a significant impact on how we feel about them. We’ll be in a lot better position to handle unpleasant events when they arise and continue along with the roller coaster if we use these five tips: search for the lessons, obtain assistance, focus on what we can control, practice self-compassion, and realize that the situation will pass.
