Miya Marcano.Orange County Sheriff's Office, Florida

Today, law enforcement in Florida announced they have discovered the remains of Miya Marcano’s body behind an abandoned apartment complex. The 19-year-old went missing on Sept. 24, at 5 p.m.

The suspect was identified as Marcano Caballero, who was the maintenance man at the apartment complex, and also a resident.  Police believe he used the master key to gain entry into Caballero’s apartment.  And while law enforcement has yet released the details, Marano’s family is struggling to cope.

“It’s been tragic, it’s been horrible, it’s not something we were looking forward to,” Marcano’s grandmother Violet Deville told the local paper. “Even though some of us had it in the back of our minds, we still had hope that we would find her alive.”

Detectives suspected Caballero was involved in Marano’s disappearance. They had planned to follow up until they discovered that on Sept. 27, he was dead from an apparent suicide inside his apartment complex.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina said. “As a community, as a sheriff, as a father, you know, obviously we are grieving the loss of Miya,” he said. “We can’t imagine the pain and anguish that Miya’s parents, the family, the loved ones, and the friends, and really our entire community, have gone through and will continue to go through.”

Around 100 supporters held a candlelight vigil to honor Marcano, while other residents hung signs from their balconies criticizing the complex and management.

Marcano’s family hired attorney Daryl K. Washington, and he made it clear that the apartment management must be held responsible.

“Death is something that is very difficult, but what makes death even more difficult is when it’s death that could’ve been prevented,” Washington said, according to local station WESH. “It’s very awful that we have a complex that did not take the proper precautions to assure that this young lady is safe.”

In response, the management at the apartment complex said they performed the required background checks on Caballero, and found “no record of burglary or sexual assault.”
