After 13 years, pop star Britney Spears has finally decided to speak out against hoping to end her father’s, Jamie Spears’ conservatorship.  As part of the conservatorship agreement, he controls her personal life and finances.   After the singer made her thoughts known, her fans sparked an online campaign that has gained national attention.  And while Spears has finally stated her wishes, experts believe that the case might take months or years for a resolution.

On Instagram, she posted that she never spoke against this issue due to “Pride.” But, she added, “I’m bringing this to people’s attention because I don’t want people to think my life is perfect because it’s definitely not at all, and if you have read anything about me in the news this week… you obviously really know now it’s not.”  In the emotional 23 minutes speech, she added, “I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized, and now I just want my life back.”

Following Spear’s public meltdown in 2008, guardianship was handed over by the court to her father. The decision placed her funds, career choices, and medical treatment under his decision.  According to the singer, the extent of his influence consumed every facet of her life. For example, she said the conservatorship did not allow her to get married, have another child, forced her to perform on specific dates regardless of her choice, and she had to take certain medications.

In response to his daughter wanting to end the conservatorship, Jamie told the media that he always had his daughter’s best interests at heart.  And his lawyer said that his client is troubled by the singer’s allegations.  “He is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain,” said the lawyer.  “Mr. Spears loves his daughter, and he misses her very much.”

Megan Radford, who started a one-woman protest with a slogan “Free Britney,” told the Guardian newspaper, “There aren’t that many people who actually get out of conservatorships,” said. “The formal process through the probate courts is slow and ineffective.”

Since this incident, several celebrities have come out in support of Britney, from her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake to her current boyfriend Sam Asghari, and several other celebrities such as Rose McGowan and Mariah Carey have tweeted in her favor.
