Agnes Tirop celebrates winning bronze in the women's 10,000m final during the 2019 World Championships.

In a heartbreaking story, Agnes Tirop, a Kenyan long-distance runner and two-time bronze medalist world championships, was killed yesterday by stab wounds to her belly.  Some news sites say the 25-year-old’s husband was involved.

Tirop was beginning to show signs of something special when she took home bronze medals in the women’s 10,000 meters at the 2017 and 2019 world championships.

But it was her outstanding performance in Germany after she won the world record in the women-only 10-kilometer road race, crossing the line at 30:0. The previous record was in 2002 by Morocco’s Asmae Leghzaoui 2002, that she excelled.

In 2015, Tirop won the world cross-country title at the age of 19, and became the second-youngest champion ever.

“It is even more painful that Agnes, a Kenyan hero by all measures, painfully lost her young life through a criminal act perpetrated by selfish and cowardly people,” Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta said in a statement.
