We all know Kevin Spacey. The legendary actor set screens alight with his performances on both film and television, on his way to winning two Academy Awards and a slew of other laurels. However, his career rightfully took a turn towards implosion due to harrowing sexual abuse accounts, until now, when Spacey has landed a new acting job after four years.
A Possible Comeback?
Spacey recently made headlines again when it was announced that he would be starring in L’uomo Che Disegnò Dio, a low-budget Italian indie film. Spacey’s role has been defined as a small supporting part as a police detective.
The film is produced by Italian filmmaker Louis Nero, with Franco Nero directing and starring in the film, which is about the rise and fall of a blind artist. The legendary actress Vanessa Redgrave, who is Franco’s wife, is also supposed to appear in the film for a cameo given she can fly to Italy from the UK. Redgrave is a colleague of Spacey’s during his time at the Old Vic theatre.
Franco Nero was full of praises for Spacey, saying, “I’m very happy Kevin agreed to participate in my film. I consider him a great actor and I can’t wait to start the movie.” Spacey declined to comment.
Although it has been four years, Spacey is still mired in a host of sexual abuse allegations, with several investigations continuing internationally. He has denied all allegations except for the one put forward by Anthony Rapp and continues to exhibit himself as wronged by his alleged victims.
How it All Came Down for Kevin Spacey
The cards fell for Kevin Spacey when actor Anthony Rapp revealed that he was sexually abused as a 15-year-old by the American Beauty actor. Rapp’s admission came during the height of the MeToo movement, prompting a tone-deaf apology from Spacey in which he decided to come out as a gay man.
The apology was widely criticized, and several other individuals came forth to discuss their abuse at the hands of Spacey. The London Metropolitan police are currently investigating six allegations of sexual abuse and assault, while 20 men have alleged abuse at the hands of Spacey during his tenure at the Old Vic theatre.
The blowback essentially put a halt to Spacey’s career. He was fired as the lead from House of Cards. Along with that, he was removed from his role in All the Money in the World, a role he had finished filming for. He was replaced by Christopher Plummer in the Oscar-nominated film.
Since then, Spacey has been a recluse, only showing now and then on his YouTube channel in his House of Cards character. His last public appearance was in Rome, where he showed up in a theater to read a poem about a boxer who relived his once-glorious career. Spacey wrote the poem himself and his appearance saw severe criticism and was met with confusion rather than acceptance.
For many, the former House of Cards star has not done enough to warrant a possible comeback and should rather be convicted and imprisoned.
