The goal of this site is to report stories and provide commentary on matters that impact us, whether the news happened 20 years or 24 hours ago.

At 19-years-old, Salau not only tackled racism but also her mission was to bring to the forefront violence women have been subjected to for decades.

During one of her tweets, the activists revealed a black man sexually assaulted her. Salau gave a description of her attacker, although it was unclear whether he was ever arrested.

By that point in her life, Salau’s was fragile, especially when she met 49-year-old Aaron Glee at a bus stop in Florida in 2019.   The two chatted for a while, and Glee, older and presumably wiser, offered a sympathetic ear while strengthening her worth. At one point, Glee even extended the offer for Salua to shower and rest at his home for the night.

Desperate for help, Salua agreed.  So, Glee called his 75-year-old friend Victoria Sims, asking if she could give him and Salau a ride to his home.

Sims knew Glee from her previous volunteer efforts; she prepared his meals and transported him around town in the past, so naturally, the retired state worker was readily available to assist.

Salua, a striking-looking woman compared to the rugged-looking Glee, settled by taking a shower before going to bed.  And that’s when the unthinkable happened.  He attacked her according to court records.  Salua fought, but Glee “overpowered” her and sexually assaulted her before killing her on June 6.

And on June 11, the Tallahassee police received a report from Sim’s family that she went missing, and traced her cellphone to Glee’s residence.

On June 13, officers swarmed his home and discovered Sims’ body under a bloody sheet in a bedroom. Upon further investigation, they located Salau’s body under a pile of leaves in the woods behind Glee’s home.

Glee was fully aware of his actions and decided to flee, hoping to take a train out of state when police apprehended him and brought him into custody.

“Glee stated that he was aware he would be arrested and likely sentenced to prison if he allowed Salau to leave the residence,” information in court documents showed. “Glee indicated he determined that his only course of action was to end her life.”

The disturbing reality is, from 1970 to 2015, 22.8 million women and girls have gone missing for some reason or another. And current data suggests 81% of women are assaulted in some way.

Sim and Salau’s deaths should be a reminder that society must understand the statistics of violence women experience and continue to bring awareness to this issue regardless of when such incidents occur.

Sims and Salau

“Each woman [ Salau and Sims]  was passionate about improving the lives of others,” the Tallahassee Police Department wrote,” at the time. “Toyin was very passionate,” one of her friends,  Danaya Hemphill, told reporters at the time. “She was very vocal she was very loving, very spiritual, very caring. Toyin she was like a light in a dark room. That was Toyin.”

Alina Amador, a photographer who frequently recruited Salau to model for her, said. “Her beauty was so radiant, and modeling for her was so effortless was very calm and gentle.”

At the time, Salau’s death garnered national attention. Singer Kehlani tweeted about her, rapper Noname sang about her, and vigils around the country have been held to honor her.
