The FDA recently discovered that a hand sanitizer made by Coppertone which sells ArtNaturals products that contains cancer-causing chemicals.  FDA said in a statement that it found “unacceptable levels of benzene, acetaldehyde and acetal contaminants.”

Coppertone also makes aerosol sunscreens, which are sold at CVS stores, Walmart, and Amazon. According to the FDA, they attempted to contact Coppertone, but were unsuccessful, which prompted the FDA to issue the warning

“Benzene and acetaldehyde are both linked to cancer in humans, while acetal can irritate the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin…” wrote author KATE GIBSON (read the story here).  The FDA urged Americans to dispose of ArtNaturals hand sanitizers and sunscreen in hazardous waste containers, and do not pour them down a drain or flush them.

The recall involves 12 lots of Pure & Simple SPF 50, Pure & Simple Kinds SPF 50, Pure & Simply Baby SPF 50, Sport Mineral SPF 50, travel-size Coppertone and Sport Spray SPF 50.

Last week, several Johnson & Johnson pulled sunscreens after levels of benzene were discovered.   The products where Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen and four Neutrogena sunscreen versions: Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen, CoolDry Sport aerosol sunscreen, Invisible Daily Defense aerosol sunscreen, and UltraSheer aerosol sunscreen.

The chemical in benzene has “a colorless or light-yellow liquid chemical at room temperature.” Benzene has been found in cigarettes, gasoline, glues, adhesives, cleaning products, and paint strippers.

The best hand sanitizer to use contained alcohol-based with least 60 percent ethanol.
