The singer of “Lose You to Love Me” spoke out about her mental health in April 2020. Gomez initially disclosed she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder on Miley Cyrus’ talk show “Bright Minded.” Selena Gomez stated she felt “a great weight” lifted off her shoulders after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in April 2020. Regarding her mental health, the 29-year-old singer/actress told ELLE magazine in its September issue, “I could take a deep breath and go, ‘Okay, that explains so much.”
“There were a lot of things that should have destroyed me,” Gomez said. “‘What else?’ I thought every time I went through something. ‘Is there anything else I’m going to have to deal with?'” After being diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and undergoing a kidney transplant and chemotherapy, the “Lose You to Love Me” singer had difficulty.
She said, “There was a time when I wasn’t strong enough and would have done something to hurt myself.” “You’re going to help others,” she said, and repeating that mantra kept her going. Bipolar disorder is a “brain condition that produces extraordinary swings in mood, energy, activity levels, and the capacity to carry out day-to-day duties,” according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
As part of her mental health treatment, Gomez quit using social media, which she claims helped her feel less anxious.
“‘I’ve got to do something [more],’ I say to myself. I want people to remember me for my heart once I’m gone.’ “She stated, “I just put down this small little phone with 150 million people on it. That gave me a huge sigh of relief.”
“You know, I’d gone to treatment a couple of times for anxiety, depression, and other things that I’d been battling with,” Gomez explained. “Recently, I went to one of America’s greatest mental institutions, McLean Hospital,” she added, “and I detailed how, after years of going through a lot of different things, I recognized that I was bipolar.”
Gomez admitted to having anxiety, sadness, and panic attacks in a 2017 Vogue interview.
“It genuinely helps me to have more information. It no longer scares me now that I’m aware of it… I wanted to know everything there was to know about it, and it relieved my anxiety, “she stated.
Gomez has released three albums Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010), and When the Sun Goes Down (2011), all of which peaked within the top ten on the US Billboard 200 and earned her gold certifications.
Her musical talents have earned her eight top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100: “Come & Get It”, “The Heart Wants What It Wants”, “Good for You”, “Same Old Love”, “Hands to Myself”, “We Don’t Talk Anymore” with Charlie Puth, “It Ain’t Me” with Kygo, and “Lose You to Love Me”, the latter being her first number-one single on the chart.
Since 2017, Gomez has sold over seven million albums and 22 million singles worldwide, according to Billboard and was honored as the Billboard Woman of the Year in 2017.
