The opening in the floor of the cell led to a cavity beneath the prison.

Six Palestinian prisoners escaped from Israel’s most secure prison overnight, and police are looking for them. The men are reported to have excavated a hole in their cell’s floor, crawled through a cavity, and tunneled beneath the outer wall of Gilboa jail. A former commander of the extremist group Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade and five members of Islamic Jihad are among the fugitives.
An officer with the Israel Prison Service regarded the escape as a “serious security and intelligence failure.” It was lauded as “heroic” by Palestinian terrorist factions, BBC reported.

Authorities received complaints from local farmers about “strange people” in neighboring agricultural fields racing through fields. When prison staff conducted a headcount at 04:00 (01:00 GMT), they discovered the prisoners had escaped. The convicts are presumed to have escaped by uncovering a hole through the washroom floor and took a rusted spoon hidden behind a poster according to the Jerusalem Post.

The opening led to a hollow place beneath the prison created when piles were lowered into the ground during construction. An Israeli police commander identified it as a “structural weakness.
The inmates are believed to have traveled through a space where they reached an outside wall and manipulated their way to a dirt road just beyond. Roadblocks have reportedly been built by Israeli border police and army troops involved in the manhunt to prevent the escapees from reaching the surrounding occupied West Bank or Jordan east of Gilboa jail.

The Shin Bet security organization suspected the prisoners had contact with people outside the prison using a smuggled mobile phone, and that they were picked up in an automobile.
According to Israeli media, four of the men who escaped were Islamic Jihad members serving life sentences after being convicted of planning or carrying out attacks that killed Israelis, while the fifth was held without charge for two years under an administrative detention order.

The tunnel was discovered near the prison’s perimeter in a rural area.

Israeli border police and army troops have taken aggressive action by arranging roadblocks to stop the men from reaching the nearby occupied West Bank or Jordan east of Gilboa prison. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stressed to Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev and “emphasized that this is a grave incident that requires an across-the-board effort by the security forces” to find the fugitives.

However, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum praised the prisoners, calling their actions a “huge triumph” that demonstrated “our courageous fighters’ resolve and determination inside the enemy’s prisons cannot be beaten.”
