Latoya Acree, a soul singer in Virginiathat performed in the True Soul band was gearing up for a show on Saturday to talk about domestic violence, but she was found shot in front of her home in Spotsylvania County on Friday. Her 21-year-old son Elijah D. Smith has been arrested and charged to court for her murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
According to the county sheriff’s office, Acree, was found in her home’s driveway on Pondoley Drive with a gunshot wound to her upper body by policemen responding to a shooting call around 12:30 a.m. on Friday. Attempts by medics to resuscitate her failed.
The 41-year-old singer was famous for her powerful voice, and her band, True Soul, is known to perform in the D.C. area and other areas. “Caesar Roy, the victim’s bandmates, said on Monday that Acree was happy, and things looked bright for her before she was fatally shot. Their True Soul band was about to perform at the Saturday show, but they now intend to dedicate the performance to Acree’s memory.
Pam Gallahan, the band’s marketing director and close friend of Acree, told Wtop News, “I knew she had problems, not to that level, nothing where I was worried for her safety or anything like that. She befriended everyone she met…she was just a very genuine and good-hearted person,” Gallahan said.
Smith was found in a nearby Four Mile Fork hotel and is now facing second-degree murder charges. The Sheriff’s Office released a statement about the incident, saying an investigation revealed there was an argument between Smith and his mother before the fatal shooting occurred.
The suspect is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond; he had been out on bond pending an assault and battery trial before the fatal shooting, according to NBC Washington reported.
